Why We Assess Before We Act: The Maverick Gardner Philosophy

by | May 22, 2026 | Reconciliation in Practice | 0 comments

At Maverick Gardner Pathways North, we believe the most important thing we
can do — before recommending a program, pointing toward a job posting, or
building any kind of plan — is to sit down, listen, and assess. That belief is
not a formality. It is the foundation of everything we do.

When someone walks through our
doors, they often arrive with a mix of hope, uncertainty, and urgency. Maybe
they have been out of work for a while. Maybe they are ready for a career
change but do not know where to start. Maybe someone they trust referred them
and they are not entirely sure what to expect. One of the first things we do is
sit down and listen. Then we assess.

To some, that might feel like
an extra step. Another form to fill out. Another waiting room. But to us, it is
the most important thing we can do.

People Are Not One-Size-Fits-All

Here is something we have
learned over years of working with our community: two people can walk in with
the same goal and need completely different paths to get there.

One person might say, “I want
to work in healthcare.” But after a deeper conversation, we discover one of
them has transferable skills from a logistics background that could fast-track
them into a healthcare coordinator role — while the other needs foundational
training before anything else will stick.

If we skipped the assessment
and pointed them both toward the same program, we would be doing a disservice
to both. Assessment is not about slowing people down. It is about making sure
that when they take a step, it is the right one.

What We Are Really Looking For

When we sit down with someone
for an assessment, we are not testing them. There is no pass or fail. What we
are doing is building a picture — of who they are, what they have experienced,
what they are good at (including things they may not have thought to mention),
and what might be standing in their way.

We look at work history and
transferable skills, because even experience from volunteering, caregiving, or
informal work counts. We look at learning style and readiness, so we can match
people to programs they will actually succeed in. We look at barriers and
support needs, because sometimes a job is not the first step — sometimes
housing, transportation, or childcare needs to come first. And we look at goals
and motivations, because sustainable employment starts with knowing why you
want to work, not just where.

This is not a checklist. It is
a conversation.

Building a Path That Actually Fits

Once we have a fuller picture,
we can build something real. At Maverick Gardner, we believe a pathway should
feel like it was made for you — because it was. Our assessments allow us to
connect people to the right training programs, the right supports, and the
right opportunities at the right time.

That kind of intentionality
matters. Research consistently shows that when individuals are placed in roles
or programs aligned with their strengths and goals, they stay longer, perform
better, and report higher job satisfaction. Assessment is not just good for the
individual — it is good for the employers and communities they become part of.

Our Commitment to You

We know your time is valuable.
We know that when you are ready to make a change, waiting feels hard. But we
also know that rushing into the wrong direction wastes far more time than
taking a few extra days to get it right.

Our assessment process is
designed to be as welcoming and straightforward as possible. We meet people
where they are — not where we think they should be. Everything shared with us
stays confidential and is used only to help us help you better.

Whether you have been referred
to us by a partner organization or you reached out on your own, you will be met
with the same care and respect. Because at Maverick Gardner Pathways North, we
do not just open doors — we make sure it is the right door for you.
